This West Coast experience was capped off by a self-guided walking tour through the Downtown East Side. This area of Vancouver has been experiencing social and economic problems over a number of years, and the University of British Columbia's Learning Exchange provided a valuable briefing of the area, its history and characteristics. Tour participants also receive important safety guidelines before embarking in small groups of individuals on a first-hand discovery of the area. When visiting this area it becomes evident that the neighbourhood is much more diverse than anticipated, and that many community organizations and individuals are dedicating a great amount of time and effort to helping this community in need.
